Today I did my first dance class of February - Week 1, Day 2 of Datura Online's program Intro to Fusion Belly Dance, Zoe Jakes's "Old School Moves". I did a warm up using Ashley Lopez's "Pilates Conditioning and Warm Up" video. My left knee had started feeling wonky again, but it felt better after the conditioning video.
In "Old School Moves" Zoe Jakes teaches traditional bellydance movements she had learned from Katarina Burda, Jamila Salimpour, John Compton, and Jill Parker (the Campfire Step). These are foundation movements for her format DanceCraft. She teaches Egyptian, Heel Toe Toe, Twist Step, Stomp Step, Choo Choo, Sit Toe Toe, Pivot Shift Step, Zafira Turn, 1 in 6, Step Forward Back Forward, Arabic 1, 2, and 3, Push Turn with Palms, Samiha, Pivot, Taxim Dip Turn, Three Step Turn, and the Campfire Step. At the end of the class she did an improvisational drill with all the movements she had taught. The hip isolations were simple, the arm patterns were simple, but putting it together with tricky footwork was the challenging part. I got a good sweat - Zoe Jakes in her video "Why Study Old School Moves?" had talked about how these movements were a cardio workout in itself.
